Olfaction
Plants continuously emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as part of their communication with surrounding environments. These signals often emerge before visible symptoms of stress, disease, or environmental change appear. This work-in-progress explores how machine sensing can reveal ecological processes beyond ordinary human perception. By capturing plant-emitted signals and translating them into generative moving images, the project investigates new forms of ecological awareness and more-than-human relationships between plants, sensors, algorithms, and observers.
Hao Wang
Hao Wang is a system-oriented designer working across art, technology, and ecological thinking. His practice focuses on translating invisible signals — from biological, environmental, and computational systems — into actionable forms of perception and decision. Through sensing technologies, data modelling, and system design, he explores how complex processes can be interpreted, communicated, and intervened in — particularly under conditions of uncertainty. His work operates between organic dynamics and structured systems, building bridges between what can be sensed, understood, and acted upon.
